RYA / MCA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence aims:

The aim of the RYA / MCA Powerboat Advanced CoC is to help prepare you for the exam on the second day. We help you achieve this by spending one day revising any skills which might need a little attention. We tailor this to suit you to help you prepare for the exam. On the second day you will be assessed by an external examiner for your certificate of competence exam.

Powerboat Advanced CoC Course content:

On our RYA / MCA Powerboat Advanced CoC exam you will spend time in the classroom revising chart work, collision regulations, and meteorology. You will also get out on the water to practice boat handling and night time passage making. There is not enough time to revise everything, but we try and focus on key skills and any areas which you might need a little more practice.

RYA / MCA Powerboat Advanced CoC exam:

The second day of the course consists of a practical exam conducted by an independent examiner, and on passing you will be issued the internationally recognised RYA / MCA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence. Skippers wishing to operate commercially will then need to apply for a Commercial Endorsement on their Certificate of Competence.

Course pre-requisites:

We highly recommend doing the RYA Powerboat Advanced Course to help you prepare. You will need practical experience of coastal passage making and high speed boat handling at night. An understanding of chart work and navigation to Yachtmaster theory level, preferably the RYA Yachtmaster theory certificate. Also a VHF SRC certificate and a valid First Aid certificate is needed. The sea time requirements are 30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles & 12 night hours. If you hold the RYA Powerboat Advanced Course Completion Certificate then the seatime is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles, 12 night hours. All qualifying seatime must be within 10 years prior to the exam.
