Yachtmaster theory course

  • Full course price £399
  • 6 day course
  • Strongly recommended before doing the practical Yachtmaster course
  • Free parking at Chichester Marina

Course aims:

On the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory course you will gain an advanced understanding of traditional methods of navigation in offshore tidal waters.  This course is strongly recommended for anyone considering either the Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore practical course.  It would also be useful for those considering the Coastal Skipper qualification.  One of the most common causes of Yachtmaster practical exam failure is a poor understanding of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) and the traditional methods of navigation.  This course is designed to make sure that you are adequately prepared and ready to apply these principles if you progress on to take the practical exam.

Course content:

The Yachtmaster Theory course covers:

  • Tides and Tidal streams
  • Buoyage
  • Pilotage and Passage Planning
  • Collision Regulations and Rules of the road
  • Meteorology
  • Rules off the road
  • Navigation in Restricted Visibility
  • Safety at sea

The course is taught in our spacious classroom at Chichester Marina.

Course pre-requisites:

An understanding of chart work and navigation equivalent to Day Skipper level, preferably having previously completed the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course.
