Meet the Team

Company Background:

Portsmouth Marine Training was set up by Steve Dimmer in 2009 to provide training to the berth holders of Southsea Marina. Recognising there was a demand for further training in Langstone Harbour the company quickly expanded to offer RYA Powerboat Training on their 6.5m RIB to the general public. This proved successful so the company invested in a luxury 40ft Motor Cruiser ‘Gabriele’ to provide RYA Motor Cruising courses. As a keen sailor Steve realised there was a boat missing from the fleet, so we added ‘Jaymist IV’ a 40ft sailing yacht for RYA Sail Training. Our last editions for PWC (Jet Ski) training were a Yamaha and Sea-Doo Spark.  Due to growth, Steve’s wife Nikki, opened a  RYA Training Centre called Chichester Marine Training in Chichester Marina in May 2017.  Through both Chichester and Portsmouth we now offer RYA sail cruising, Motor Cruising, Powerboat Training, PWC (Jet Ski) training as well as a comprehensive range of RYA shorebased courses in our fully equipped classroom at Chichester Marina.

From our humble beginning’s teaching mainly recreational boat owners, we have now expanded to provide specialised training to the commercial sector. We are proud to work with the wind farm industry, the fishing industry, the super yacht industry, scuba divers, harbour boards, universities, and many more.

As the company expanded we employed Peter King as the Business Manager and School Principal, then Gary Plum as the Assistant Manager. We’ve built a small core of highly experienced and talented RYA instructors to help teach our courses, and as Steve is an Instructor Trainer many of our staff have been trained in house.

Although we have grown significantly since 2009 we are still small family run businesses, always willing to go the extra mile for our customers.

The Team:

Steve Dimmer – Chief Instructor and Business Owner – Steve has been messing about in boats since he was a young boy. He started by sailing dinghies, which developed into a passion for offshore yacht racing. Steve has been working on the water in a professional capacity for over 20 years, in the process logging over 150,000 miles, with over 40 ocean passages and 2 circumnavigations. Steve divides his time between sail and power having worked in the superyacht industry and the diving industry before becoming a full time RYA instructor. Steve is a Yachtmaster Ocean, a Yachtmaster Instructor for both Sail and Motor Cruising, an Advanced Powerboat Instructor, and an RYA Trainer of Instructors. Steve also teaches RYA Shorebased Navigation courses and the specialised RYA Diesel Engine, Sea Survival and Radar courses, as well as being a VHF SRC Assessor. He is the Business Owner and our Chief Instructor, with overall responsibility for training.

Nikki Dimmer – Chichester Marine Training – Business Owner and School Principal – The airline that Nikki previously worked for used to own a couple of dinghies and so Nikki went to their race evenings which is where she first discovered sailing.  On meeting Steve she was quickly introduced to bigger boats and is now working her way up to Yachtmaster Sail.  Nikki also likes to have the occasional blast on the RIB and is a commercially endorsed powerboat and sail skipper.  After discovering the fun of jet skis, Nikki is now a PWC Instructor.

Peter King – Portsmouth Marine Training – Business Manager and School Principal – Peter started his career in the marine industry when he was a student as he preferred playing with boats to working behind a bar! He started by working as a manager in a chandlery. This developed into working in various roles for a variety of marinas on the south coast. During his time working for the marinas he developed his skippering skills by driving the work boats, towing all types of vessels, and skippering both sail and motor boats. He brought a series of sailing yachts to hone his skills to achieve the Yachtmaster Sail certificate, and is a Cruising Instructor for Sail.  He has also gained the Powerboat Advanced, Powerboat Instructor, and VHF SRC Assessor certificates and most recently the First Aid Instructor ticket. Peter enjoys teaching students out on the water, but also enjoys his role as the School Principal being responsible for the administration of the business.

garyGary Plum – Assistant Manager – Gary came to boating late in life, but has taken it up with gusto. He can’t decide if he prefers sailing, powerboating, or motor cruising so is currently working his way through the RYA syllabus on all of these craft, which is no small feat! His previous jobs required a high level of organisation and customer service so he seemed the ideal candidate to become our Assistant Manager. His role is to help with the administration and marketing of the business and customer enquiries.

Gary Martin – Advanced Powerboat Instructor and PWC Instructor – Gary has been on and off boats of all types since he was three weeks old (a very keen boater for a father!), the water is his happy place and he gets huge pleasure from being able to help others boat safely so they can get the same enjoyment from being on the water as he does.  Gary initially came to us just to renew his ICC and got so much from the training that he continued to formalise his experience within the RYA Powerboat scheme, before accidentally(!) turning his hobby into a secondary career.   Over the following years he progressed through the RYA Powerboat  scheme to become an Advanced Powerboat Instructor.  Gary is also a PWC Instructor, VHF SRC Assessor and holds the Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) qualification.

Alan West – Yachtmaster Instructor – Alan is a Yachtmaster Instructor for both Sail and Motor Cruising, and a VHF SRC Assessor.  He regularly teaches the Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Shorebased courses, and as a specialist Radar Instructor he teaches the RYA one day Radar course.  Alan has been sailing for many years and keeps his own yacht in Portsmouth Harbour.  With his wealth of experience, Alan is comfortable teaching in the classroom or on the water, on a 25ft sailing yacht or a 75ft motor yacht.

ian dawesIan Dawes – Sail Cruising and Powerboat Instructor – Ian is a Yachtmaster Offshore and has been sailing for over twenty years, having sailed extensively in UK waters and chartered abroad in the Mediterranean with family and friends.  He is a Cruising Instructor Sail and a Shorebased Instructor, as well as a keen powerboater and Powerboat Instructor.  Until recently Ian was a yacht broker so if you’re interested in a little advice on the pros and cons of different boats then Ian’s your man!

Corey Diaper – Powerboat Instructor – Corey is an extremely experienced Powerboat Instructor.  He has been working for Premier Marinas at Southsea for nearly 10 years lifting, moving and towing all types of vessels, both power and sail.  As such, Corey has gained a valuable insight in to the handling characteristics of different vessels which means that he’s a very safe pair of hands when teaching on a client’s own boat.  Corey also enjoys yacht racing and he’s been an enthusiastic crew member for the past few years racing in the local club Spring and Summer series.
